Sitting taller than its predecessor, Four World Trade Center has no shortage of heart. The building was dreamed up by Pritzker prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, who designed the minimalist exterior out of respect for the tragedies of 9/11. Despite its modest facade, Four WTC has already been dubbed “the most advanced office building of the 21st century,” thanks to its state-of-the-art guts. / The guts themselves are comprised of 1.8 million square feet of class A office and retail space, which are supported by a number of cutting edge green-energy initiatives. These initiative include windows made of ultra-clear glass that absorb heat in the winter and reflect it in the summer, filtered air drawn from the top of the building to reduce energy costs, and turbines that generate electricity from wasted steam, among others. / Four WTC is also located in the heart of downtown Manhattan and overlooks the entire WTC complex. As a result, it is close to a variety of firms, restaurants, and amenities. Currently, only the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have leased space in the building, but other large firms such as Facebook have also indicated interest to take the plunge themselves. Four WTC is thus a fantastic start to the revitalization of Manhattan’s downtown, and will no doubt serve as the vanguard to Manhattan’s burgeoning skyline.
