Oak Lawn at a Glance

Oak Lawn is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas. Bounded by the city of Highland Park, the North Central Expressway, Stemmons Freeway, Woodall Rodgers Freeway and several other roads, Oak Lawn covers an area over 12 square miles. Known for having a bevy of good restaurants, bars and clubs, Oak Lawn is home to many professionals who live in the neighborhoods many upscale town homes, condominiums, apartment complexes and duplexes. The Uptown part of Oak Lawn, located on McKinney Avenue and Turtle Creek Boulevard features a considerable number of newer developments including high rise condos and apartments. The demographic makeup of the area is pretty diverse, thanks to its mix of new developments and older, single family homes. The southern part of modern day Oak Lawn was once part of “Little Mexico,” with St. Anne’s Catholic School serving as the heart of the community. Unfortunately, by the 1980s “Little Mexico” was gone, making way for high rise office building, luxury hotels and condos. In 2010, St. Anne’s was converted into an upscale restaurant called Saint Ann, after the historic school. For many years, Oak Lawn has been a staple of Dallas’ LGBT community, with many of the area’s restaurants, bars, clubs and businesses catering to that crowd. Cedar Springs Road, which runs through the center of Oak Lawn, has housed the center of the Dallas gay community for over 35 years, at the intersection of Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton Street. Flanked by the Central Expressway and the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, Oak Lawn is a very accessible neighborhood. The M-Line also services Oak Lawn and there are nearby DART Blue and Red light rail stops at Cityplace Station. Also nearby is Victory Station, located in Victory Park and servicing the Trinity Railway Express.
